WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), for his monthly Local Spotlight, recognized St. Bernard Parish firefighter, Andrew Nixon, for saving a woman’s life seconds before her car was engulfed in flames following a collision with an 18-wheeler. Andrew was on his way home from a wedding with his fiancé when he pulled the young woman from her vehicle and carried her to safety. The 23-year-old firefighter reflects on the experience as a full-circle moment—drawing strength from the memory of his niece, Everleigh, whose tragic passing continues to inspire his commitment to protect others.

I want to recognize Andrew Nixon, a St. Bernard Parish firefighter who saved a young woman’s life.
After witnessing a car crash off-duty—on his way home from a wedding with his fiancée—Andrew pulled over to the side of the road to check on a woman whose vehicle had just been struck by an 18-wheeler.
Noticing that the car’s tires were on fire, Andrew broke the woman’s windshield, lifted her out of the vehicle, and got her to safety seconds before her vehicle was completely overtaken by flames.
A woman’s life was saved because Andrew put himself in harm’s way to help her.
Andrew is a local hero—and anyone who saw him as an uncle knows his bravery and selflessness run deep.
Andrew, thank you for your bravery in the service of someone you did not even know. But because we’re to do unto others as we would have them do unto us, you saved her life.
Everleigh is in Heaven. She is proud of you for saving another’s life, even though hers could not be.

In September, Cassidy highlighted French Settlement Mayor Jeremy Aydell, whose request to the office in June 2024 to include beauticians in President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts Bill became federal tax policy.
