WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) announced the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) will receive $122,112,519.00 to support the Calcasieu-Sabine Large-Scale Marsh and Hydrologic Restoration project. The investment will restore and protect natural resources, ecosystems, and coastal wetlands in the Cameron-Creole Watershed, while also supporting long-term economic health in the Lake Charles region.
“Southwest Louisiana still feels the effects of Hurricane Laura years later. Our coastline took a beating,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We secured this funding to restore marshland, strengthen homes and businesses, and keep Southwest Louisiana safe.”
The project will construct seven gravity drainage structures along the eastern rim of the existing Calcasieu Lake levee, improve up to 18 miles of conveyance channels to strengthen flow pathways across the marsh, and partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create approximately 400 acres of new marsh using dredged material. This investment is designed to reduce flood stress and land loss in the Cameron-Creole Watershed, protecting communities, ports, and wildlife habitat in the Calcasieu-Sabine Basin.
